AMC and Canal+ have officially greenlit a new 'Point Break' series, set over 30 years after the iconic 1991 film. The series, developed by AMC, will follow a new heist crew with ties to the notorious Ex-Presidents gang, while the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer to infiltrate them.
Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios, expressed excitement over the greenlight, stating, 'Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about.
The series, set in the present day, will be produced by Alcon Television Group, the TV arm of Alcon Entertainment, which was behind the original movie. The showrunners and executive producers are Dave Kalstein and Christopher C.
The eight-part series will go into production early next year and will be distributed globally by Studiocanal. AMC and AMC+ will air the series in the US, while Canal+ will carry it in France and across its pay-TV footprint in Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The original 'Point Break' starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as surfer-turned-robber Bodhi. A 2015 remake of the film, starring Luke Bracey and Édgar Ramírez, was less well-received, with critics noting a lack of charm compared to the original.

- This comes after Deadline revealed in December that the Breaking Bad broadcaster was developing a series based on the iconic Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves surf heist thriller.
- AMC and French broadcaster Canal+ are going with God after greenlighting the Point Break television series.
- Rogers, who has exec produced series including Apple’s Sugar and AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, will serve as co-showrunners.
- Studiocanal will handle global distribution, although no specific UK broadcaster or streaming home has been announced.
- There was, unfortunately, also a 2015 remake of ‘Point Break’, starring Luke Bracey ( Elvis ) and Édgar Ramírez ( The Assassination of Gianni Versace ).
- It ditched much of what made the original work in favour of a glossy, globe-trotting tour of extreme sports, spectacular scenery and remarkably little of the charm that made people care about ‘Point Break’ in the first place.
