NLSIU Bengaluru Reschedules Convocation Amid CJI Invitation Row

In Short: NLSIU Bengaluru has rescheduled its 34th annual convocation to October 17, following a row over invitations to the Chief Justice of India and the Bar Council of India.
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has announced that its 34th annual convocation will now take place on October 17, after the original September 12 ceremony was cancelled due to a dispute over invitations. According to reports, the university had initially stated that degrees would be conferred in absentia following the cancellation.
Last month, around 165 graduating students, 409 current students, and 128 alumni of NLSIU signed an open letter condemning the Bar Council of India’s (BCI) action against NALSAR students. This action was in response to the BCI’s proposed presence of the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, and BCI Chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra at the university’s convocation ceremony.
A section of graduating students and NLSIU alumni had opposed the invitations, citing similar reasons to those of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, which had also objected to the CJI’s presence at their convocation following remarks he made on the NEET paper leak protests and the police response to them.
