According to reports, Mayawati has recently removed her nephew Akash Anand from key party positions, a move that has raised speculation about the future of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Akash's removal comes after Mayawati described him as politically immature, stating that he would continue working as an ordinary party worker without any major responsibility. This latest organizational flip-flop follows a pattern of Mayawati repeatedly raising and lowering Akash's position over the past two years.
The decision to reorganize key positions has also seen the younger son of Mayawati's brother, Ishan, being given an organizational role almost immediately afterwards. This suggests that Mayawati may be testing another family member for a larger role within the BSP. Sources close to the party indicate that Mayawati was upset with Akash for making statements of his own during a speech to BSP workers in Hathras and Jewar last month, as he was supposed to communicate only 'Behenji ka sandesh' (Mayawati's message).
Mayawati's actions are being seen as a step to maintain her authority and the only power center within the party. In a social media post, Siddharth, the father-in-law of Akash, denied influencing Akash and stated that Mayawati should decide whether her son-in-law should be given any responsibility in the party again. A senior BSP leader commented, 'All that exchange of messages between 'Behenji (Mayawati) and Ashok and the remarks made against Ashok and Akash in the past, clearly indicates there is some tussle within the family.
Mayawati's decision to completely free her nephew Akash Anand of any party responsibilities and act against senior functionaries, including Anand's father-in-law Ashok Siddharth, 'in the interests of the party' is being viewed as a strategic move to maintain her authority. According to a leader, 'As per organizational structure, Ishan will directly interact with both Gautam and Rajaram. He is empowered to call them for meetings. Ishan will report to Mayawati and his father and party vice-president Anand Kumar.
The latest shake-up within the BSP has sparked discussions about whether the party is preparing to foreground a new face as its political future or if Mayawati is simply reorganizing the party ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections next year while keeping all real authority firmly in her own hands. With these moves, Mayawati is ensuring that the party's future is not dependent on any one individual, including her nephews.
