Scientists are observing a unique geological phenomenon where Earth's crust is 'unzipping' under Italy, a process known as delamination. According to new research, the dense lower crust and attached lithosphere are peeling away from the upper crust and sinking into the mantle. This unzipping process is producing strange geology on the land above, as reported by geologists led by Stefano Tavani of the University of Florence.

Under the Apennines mountain range, this process is not occurring uniformly. Instead, it resembles a zipper, with a single front, known as a hinge, where the peeling is happening. This front is slowly migrating under Italy toward the Adriatic foreland, as explained by Tavani and his colleagues. The process, known as delamination, is a natural geological event, but it is occurring at a rate that is being closely monitored.

Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University, emphasized the importance of understanding these natural processes in the context of climate change. 'It is now time to stop acting surprised that our warming planet keeps getting warmer. This is occurring exactly as forecast by scientists literally decades ago,' Dessler said in an email.

According to reports, the crust is pulling apart along the mountain range while being squeezed together along its outer edge. This unzipping process is not solely due to El Nino, a natural and temporary warming of parts of the Pacific that warps and warms weather globally. While El Nino is a factor, it is nowhere as significant a cause as the heat-trapping gases emitted from human activities, as several scientists have noted.
