Fire on Cargo Ship Kills 25 in Eastern China

A fire broke out at about 11:15 am at the Qingdao Beihai shipyard during repair and inspection works, state-run Xinhua reported. The shipyard is controlled by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), one of the world's largest shipbuilders. The Liberia-flagged bulk carrier, Ocean Melody, was docked for repairs and was managed by Yuyangkunpeng Shanghai Shp Mgm.
Of the 42 people on board, 12 were evacuated safely and five were injured and hospitalized. The blaze was extinguished by early afternoon, according to state media. The incident occurred at the Qingdao Beihai shipyard, which is controlled by CSSC, a major shipbuilder in China. The shipyard is described as China's principal naval shipbuilder and the country's largest designer and builder of ships and offshore equipment.
President Xi Jinping has ordered preventive measures to be tightened following the tragic incident. The ship was the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Ocean Melody, as confirmed by state news agency Xinhua and CCTV reports.
