Voter Roll Changes in Maharashtra Exceed 2024 Election Votes in Some Constituencies

In Short: In three Maharashtra constituencies, the number of voters after Special Intensive Revision (SIR) deletions is less than the number of votes cast in the 2024 state Assembly elections.
According to reports, in three of the 288 Assembly constituencies in Maharashtra, the number of voters present in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) draft voter roll is less than the number of votes cast in the 2024 state Assembly elections. For instance, in Khadakwasla, 3,26,720 votes were cast in 2024 but now only 3,19,263 voters remain on the draft voter roll, a decrease of 7,457 voters. The data also shows that nearly 30 per cent of voters in 38 Maharashtra Assembly constituencies, where Muslims account for more than one-fifth of the population, have not been carried forward to the draft electoral rolls prepared as part of the SIR, according to an analysis of the draft roll data.
Further analysis by The Indian Express reveals that in 11 constituencies, the number of voters deleted from the SIR draft roll exceeds the number of unpolled votes in the 2024 state Assembly elections. In Khadakwasla, a total of 2,77,851 voters have been marked for deletion, with 2,52,247 of these voters being ‘untraceable’. The proportion of voters not carried forward does not necessarily rise with the Muslim population share of a constituency, according to the data.
California gubernatorial candidates Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton will debate in a nationally televised face-off set for days before California voters receive their mail-in ballots. The debate, which will be moderated by the cable network’s anchors Dana Bash and Jake Tapper, is scheduled to take place shortly before county elections officials begin mailing ballots to all the state’s registered voters.
Across Maharashtra, the figure of voters marked as ‘uncollectable’ is 21.14 per cent, compared to 29.77 per cent in the 38 constituencies where Muslims account for more than one-fifth of the population. The highest rates of voter deletions have been recorded in several densely populated constituencies in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

- “We will have debates, and between now and Nov. 3, we will continue to go out there and meet with folks to make sure they have an opportunity to see the candidates,” Becerra told reporters after greeting business owners, community leaders and voters during a walking tour of Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles.
- In the SIR draft voter list published on August 31, 2.06 crore voters were removed in the state, bringing down the total voter count from 9.78 crore to 7.71 crore.
- To make matters worse, this subtraction accounts for only the number of votes cast, and not the ‘true’ voters who did not vote in the 2024 election.
