Ukrainian drones reportedly struck a Russian gas facility in Novy Urengoy, located in the Yamalo-Nenets region of Siberia, from a distance of nearly 3,200 kilometers (1,988 miles) from Ukrainian territory, according to reports from Kyiv Post and Kyivindependent.
The attack, which reportedly caused a fire at the industrial facility, represents Ukraine's deepest strike into Russian territory to date. Ukrainian weapons manufacturer Fire Point confirmed that its FP-1 drone model was used in the operation, according to Kyivindependent.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated further as Russian drones were reported to have intruded into Moldovan airspace, nearly hitting the plane carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Moldovan President Maia Sandu condemned the incursions as a 'serious threat to people’s lives.
According to reports from the Institute for the Study of War, a Russian Shahed drone was detected flying through Moldovan and Romanian airspace before crashing in Moldova. Moldovan authorities closed the country’s airspace in response to the incident, which delayed Zelenskyy's departure to Norway for the king’s state funeral.
Russian officials confirmed a drone attack and fire at the facility but did not specify which one. The attack on the Novy Urengoy condensate preparation plant is a key part of the region’s gas-condensate infrastructure, according to Kyiv Post.
