Tilak, who is leading South Zone for the first time in this edition of the tournament, has been in impressive form. His unbeaten 116 in the first innings of the semi-final against North Zone had rescued South Zone, and he followed it up with 51 not out in the second innings to guide his side through a chase of 181 and into the final. However, the South Zone captain's efforts were not enough as East Zone bundled out South Zone for 336, securing their first title in 14 years with only a day of play left in the final.
The South Zone team's inability to put together substantial partnerships ultimately proved decisive, with only Tilak and Padikkal managing half-centuries. Chama Milind and Tilak Varma had countered the threat well, keeping the scoreboard ticking and taking South Zone safely through to Drinks. Tilak's valiant resistance, however, ended with a narrow miss of a century, a performance that has been appreciated by the East Zone players.
In the final, Tilak's innings was a testament to his red-ball form, which has been impressive during the ongoing edition of the Duleep Trophy. His two performances made a strong statement, and he will also travel with India's T20I squad for the Asian Games later this month as vice-captain.
