Nirvana, the influential grunge band, will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, set for September 27th. The award, which has been given to nine other bands since 1984, will be presented during the ceremony, which will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
According to Billboard, Nirvana made headlines in January 1992 when their album 'Nevermind' topped the charts, displacing Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous.' The band's success was marked by their three consecutive wins for best alternative video at the VMAs, with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' 'In Bloom,' and 'Heart-Shaped Box.
Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' video, which won Best New Artist and Best Alternative Video at the 1992 VMAs, was a pivotal moment in MTV's history. The band's performance of 'Lithium' at the VMAs that year, with an intro from 'Rape Me' from their upcoming album 'In Utero,' further cemented their status as a groundbreaking act.
The 2026 VMAs will mark the first time a rock band receives the Video Vanguard Award since Duran Duran in 2003. Previous recipients include Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, and Rihanna, among others. The timing and rationale for this accolade are not entirely clear, as Nirvana has not been active since the late 1990s.
Nirvana, consisting of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, will receive the VMAs' top career prize during the 2026 ceremony.
