Learner drivers in the UK are currently waiting an average of 20 weeks before they can book a practical driving test, a significant increase from the previous month's 20.2 weeks, according to new figures from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
The geographical restriction on test locations adds to the challenge, as learners can only book tests at their three local test centres, rather than at a more convenient location elsewhere in the country if a test slot is available.
Despite these delays, the DVSA reported that more than 2.13 million practical driving tests were conducted in the 12 months to August 2026, marking the highest rolling 12-month figure on record. However, the average wait time between booking and sitting the test remains unchanged at 11.1 weeks.
The DVSA had initially aimed to reduce the average waiting time to seven weeks by the end of the previous year, but this target has not been met. The agency has implemented several changes to its practical driving test booking system this year, including allowing only the learner driver to book their test, which has blocked instructors and third parties from booking using the learner's details.
These measures, while intended to streamline the process, have not alleviated the long wait times, leading to frustration among learners and concerns about the efficiency of the system.
