Renowned Manipur musician Chongtham Vikram Singh, a pioneer in the state's rock music movement, was killed in an assault outside his Delhi home, prompting a funeral and investigation in his home state of Imphal. Singh, 54, was a prominent figure and is considered one of the pioneers in Manipur’s rock music movement, and his death has triggered widespread concern in the community.
After the funeral, Singh’s younger brother, Chongtham Vivek, told the press that the family is awaiting justice but would respect the ongoing investigation into the alleged assault. Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the alleged assault, while a minor has also been apprehended.
Artists, musicians, and members of the State’s film fraternity gathered at Singh’s residence to offer floral tributes and stand with his grieving family. His last rites were performed at Khoyathong in Imphal East, bringing an emotional farewell to the musician.
The death of Vikram has also drawn strong condemnation from Northeastern communities, friends, and fellow musicians, who have expressed shock and anguish over the incident. Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand has written to the Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, urging a transparent investigation into Vikram’s death and calling for the case to be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
