This move triggered a wave of Democratic criticism, with former Fetterman aides saying the senator's decision was 'beyond the pale.' Trè Easton, a former legislative aide to Fetterman, commented, 'He is a troll so this kind of behavior makes sense, but to see it executed at this scale is really stunning.
Despite the criticism, Fetterman's appearance was meant to bolster Republican efforts ahead of the critical midterm elections. He stood in front of a steel mill, saying, 'That’s exactly the kind of thing that we’ll work together, and we’ll work with President Trump, to fight and defend the steel way of life, right here in the Steel Valley.' McCormick, the Republican leader, then thanked Fetterman for his 'friendship' and 'courage.
The crowd's reaction was muted, with only a few attendees cheering. However, the crowd did give a loud applause when Fetterman concluded his message to introduce McCormick on stage. The appearance comes as Fetterman has built a close bipartisan relationship with McCormick, according to NBC News.

Despite the controversy, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has said that the Republican conference would 'welcome' the Pennsylvania Democrat if Fetterman chose to switch parties.
