Geologists estimate that the tilt of sedimentary rock strata at Vasquez Rocks in Southern California averages 50 degrees, making these formations appear otherworldly from the ground. When viewed from space, the rocks, nestled between mountain ranges, are less dramatic but clearly visible as bands of gray in false-color and natural-color images from Landsat 9’s OLI (Operational Land Imager).

The rocks didn’t start out pointing skyward; their unique angles are a result of geological processes over time. Several outcrops at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area jut from the arid landscape of the Soledad Basin at remarkable angles, making them stand out even more.

This geology has made the rocks a fitting backdrop for the Star Trek franchise, which has used them since the show's inaugural season. Captain James T. Kirk and his crew often stood before these formations, which resemble Martian terrain, adding to the show's otherworldly atmosphere.
