Federal law enforcement officials warned the parents of one of the San Diego mosque shooters about concerning comments their son made about school shootings on the dark web, according to a recently filed lawsuit. The parents say the mental health facility where their 18-year-old son was receiving treatment did not heed these warnings.
Caleb Vazquez, who was living at the facility and receiving treatment for mental health conditions, was reported missing on the morning of the shooting. His parents were searching for him when the tragedy occurred.
The lawsuit alleges that Park Mental Health Treatment of San Diego failed to intervene despite signs that Vazquez posed an imminent threat. His mother shared FBI warnings with the facility's staff and therapists, but the facility did not take action.
On the evening of May 14, the FBI called Vazquez's mother, who immediately informed the treatment facility. The next day, Vazquez and another teenager killed three people at the mosque before taking their own lives.
The parents are seeking accountability for the facility's alleged failure to act on the FBI's warnings, which they believe could have prevented the tragedy.
