The decision to keep Ohtani off the mound comes after he appeared physically compromised at the plate before his break. Manager Roberts noted, "Hopefully, we don’t see that wincing we saw a handful of nights ago," referring to Ohtani's appearance during his previous games. Ohtani's return as a designated hitter was seen as a positive move, as the Dodgers won all four games during his absence, including a sweep of the Washington Nationals.
Despite the decision, Ohtani remains optimistic about his hitting performance. He said, "I'm happy to be back in the lineup and completely fine about tabling any pitching plans for now." The Dodgers hope that by focusing solely on hitting, Ohtani will get back on track and improve his performance at the plate.
