Nvidia has agreed to buy artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face for about $12.9 billion, aiming to expand its software offerings and gain access to one of the world's largest AI developer communities. The deal, Nvidia's biggest acquisition to date, will see the company pay $11.9 billion to Hugging Face investors and offer up to $1 billion in stock-based incentives to employees joining the company.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in his announcement, 'Together, we will scale Hugging Face’s platform, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide.' The companies already work together to help developers use Nvidia's computing services through the platform, and the acquisition will help Nvidia preserve its AI hardware dominance as closed-source AI providers like OpenAI and Google attempt to produce their own AI chips.

In a press call to unveil the latest version of ChatGPT, OpenAI president Greg Brockman said, 'Welcome to the AGI era,' describing the new model as a 'generational leap in capability.' Despite this, some industry figures remain skeptical of labeling any current AI models as human-level. In independent benchmark tests, ChatGPT Astra set new high scores that closely matched human scores.

Under the agreement, Nvidia will pay about $11.9 billion to Hugging Face investors and offer up to $1 billion in stock-based incentives to employees who join the company. Nvidia said Hugging Face would remain open to developers and that users would not be required to use its chips or services.
