JWST Unveils Extreme Star-Forming Galaxies Misidentified as Quasars

In Short: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has identified galaxies that were previously mistaken for faint quasars, suggesting they may be precursors to galaxy mergers and key to understanding the early growth of supermassive black holes.

When the JWST discovered its infamous Little Red Dots (LRD), it sparked significant interest and curiosity among astronomers. These LRDs, now identified as extreme star-forming galaxies, have been found to be misidentified as faint quasars.

According to Tanaka et al. (2026, PASJ), the probability of finding two LRDs with the observed angular separation is extremely low, indicating that these galaxies are likely precursors to mergers between LRDs. Such mergers may be one of the mechanisms driving the rapid growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in their early evolutionary stages.

Large galaxies in today's universe are known to host SMBHs, and the JWST's primary science goal includes observing the very early universe to gain insights into the formation and growth of these black holes. The tight relation between black hole mass and galaxy properties, such as stellar velocity dispersion and bulge mass, suggests that SMBHs influence star formation through feedback from active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity.
