Rory McIlroy is preparing for a tournament that will feel different this year, with US President Donald Trump expected to visit during the latter stages of the Amgen Irish Open. "I probably went a few years where I wasn't very proud of how I played in the Irish Open," McIlroy admitted, reflecting on his past performances. The world number two is hopeful of securing his third title at the K Club, where he previously won in 2016.
McIlroy, who finished runner-up at Royal County Down in 2024 and secured a top-10 finish at the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, is more relaxed playing in front of home crowds. However, he acknowledges that the visit will bring logistical challenges and that weekend crowds will be limited. "It's going to be different with him being here but we're here to play a golf tournament and it's a good golf course and keep our head down and play," McIlroy said.
The visit is part of Trump's long-planned trip to Ireland, which includes meetings with Irish President Catherine Connolly and the Taoiseach, Micheal Martin. McIlroy, who has been an occasional visitor to golf events, including the Ryder Cup, is intent on not allowing the distractions of the visit to get in the way of his defence of the Amgen Irish Open crown.
