Germany is bracing for potential gas shortages this winter as storage levels lag behind historical norms, according to the country’s gas storage association. With current gas storage levels at 54.52%, the industry association, INES, warned that the best Germany could achieve by November 1 would be 77% full, according to Crude Oil Prices Today.
However, the overall gas storage level for the European Union is closer to 70%, with some countries like Portugal and Poland at over 90%. This is more than the latest target set by the German government but less than the usual level of gas in storage as of November 1. "This means that if it gets very cold in December and January, shortages may emerge," Slav explained.
The situation is particularly concerning given the ongoing tensions in Ukraine and Russia, which have historically been major suppliers of natural gas to Germany. The country is already facing challenges in securing alternative sources of gas, and the current storage levels are a cause for concern among energy experts.
