US and Chinese officials are set to hold the first official bilateral discussions devoted exclusively to artificial intelligence (AI) safety since U.S. President Donald Trump's second term in office. The talks, which will be led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, are expected to address critical issues surrounding AI development and deployment.
The discussions, according to reports, are seen as crucial given the current state of AI technology and its potential global impact. Paul Triolo, a partner at DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group, commented, 'The talks between the two AI superpowers are coming at the most critical juncture.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, U.S. special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff have held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking their first visit to Kyiv since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. The talks, which lasted more than three hours, were described as 'highly useful' by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, though little new information was shared.
In Kyiv, British, French, and German national security advisers joined the Ukrainian president, Kushner, and Witkoff for the second round of talks. Zelenskyy stated that further talks with the US, France, and Germany would take place, though he did not provide additional details.

- “We’ve had a very meaningful discussion, substantive, important, and we are very encouraged and we look forward to continuing this as long as it takes,” Witkoff said after the talks.
- Al Jazeera’s Audrey MacAlpine, reporting from Kyiv, said little new information came out of the talks.
- Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described Saturday’s meeting in Moscow, which ran more than three hours, as “highly useful”, while a White House official told the Reuters news agency that the next steps would be announced in the coming weeks.
