This suggestion follows previous actions by Trump to rename geographic features, including directing the federal government to refer to Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' amid trade disputes with Canada, and earlier in his second term, to use 'Gulf of America' instead of 'Gulf of Mexico.
Unlike renaming lakes and other geographic features, which can be done through executive action, a president cannot unilaterally rename a U.S. state. The Albuquerque Journal reported that Trump's Sunday post did not explain whether he intended to pursue an actual name change or was merely reacting to a social media trend.
