Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan's husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, died on Monday while being treated in a hospital in Zanzibar, an official said. Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the news, stating that Hassan was receiving treatment for a heart condition.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who became Tanzania's first First Gentleman after President Samia took office in 2021, was a private individual who rarely appeared in public. According to reports, he was received in Uganda by President Yoweri Museveni in late August, following a state visit to Russia in June.
In a tribute shared on the Tanzanian presidency's X account, Ndejembi extended his condolences and mentioned that funeral preparations were under way in southern Kizimkazi. The vice-president also conveyed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Kenyan President William Ruto and Burundi's President Évariste Ndayishimiye both paid their respects, expressing sorrow and praying for comfort for the president and her family. In a statement, Ruto said, 'President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan was married to the president in 1978, and their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is a Tanzanian MP representing a constituency in Zanzibar. The vice-president led tributes as he conveyed his condolences to Samia, as well as Ameir's family and friends.
