South Africa's gross gold and foreign exchange reserves increased to $75.954 billion in August, up from $73.451 billion in the previous month, according to official figures. This rise in reserves comes as global economic conditions continue to evolve, with inflationary pressures and policy tightening concerns impacting the gold market.

Gold prices have faced headwinds from the latest uptick in oil prices, which have stoked inflationary concerns and necessitated policy tightening globally, according to FXStreet. Despite these challenges, gold has started the week on a bearish note, struggling to maintain above the $4,400 level amid a United States holiday-led light trading session.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payrolls rose by 162,000 in August, significantly exceeding market expectations of 56,000 and accelerating from an upwardly revised 21,000 increase in July. This robust job market data has implications for the Federal Reserve's monetary policy stance, with Goldman Sachs expecting a benign Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading to keep the Fed on hold.

In Colombia, a regime change is expected to bring about a new era of oil and gas exploration. After a four-year ban on oil and gas exploration under the previous leftist president Gustavo Petro, a new right-wing administration is eager to open the country's oil and gas reserves to foreign investors. The previous administration had aimed to make Colombia a leader in the global green energy transition by freezing new oil and gas exploration and banning hydraulic fracturing.

Meanwhile, the Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), has shifted about 86 tons of gold from North America to London to strengthen its financial preparedness amid growing geopolitical uncertainty. DNB Governor Olaf Sleijpen stated, "With this relocation, we have improved the tradability of our gold reserves. We expect that we will never need to use them, but we do need to strengthen our resilience and preparedness." The gold transferred between March and August 2026 represents roughly €10 billion based on the value of the country's reserves at the end of 2025.
