Fatima Sana, the captain of the Pakistan women's cricket team, has been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a gesture made during a recent Asia Cup match against India. The incident occurred after Sana dismissed India's Shafali Verma in a caught-and-bowled dismissal, leading her to gesture towards the pavilion, which was deemed a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.
According to reports, the gesture was made after Sana caught and bowled out Shafali Verma in her second over. Verma, who had provided India with an attacking start, was dismissed for 12 runs off six balls. The gesture was seen as provocative and was found to have crossed the line under the ICC's disciplinary regulations.
Sana admitted to her offence, which breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers gestures or actions that could disparage a dismissed batter or provoke an aggressive response. As a result, she was fined 10 percent of her match fee and handed a demerit point. This is Sana's second demerit point, with her previous one coming during Pakistan's T20I against Ireland in Dublin on August 6, 2025.
Pakistan, the 50-over world champions, have won a record seven Asia Cup titles, most recently in 2022. Despite the fine, the team is looking for a win against Hong Kong in their upcoming match on Monday, aiming to maintain their strong performance in the Asia Cup.
