International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8, aims to highlight the importance of literacy in promoting inclusion and sustainable futures, according to UNESCO. The day was proclaimed by UNESCO during its 14th General Conference in 1967, with the first observance taking place in 1967.
This year, the theme will draw attention to the role of literacy in supporting sustainable futures and expanding opportunities for livelihoods and economic development. Since its inception, September 8 has been observed annually to remind governments, educators, organizations, and the wider public of the importance of literacy.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, Cameroon's midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 30, bringing an end to nearly a decade with the Indomitable Lions. The Napoli player confirmed his decision on social media on August 31, stating that after many years representing Cameroon, he had decided to bring his international career to a close.
