In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wenders explained his motivation for making the film: "I have loved architecture since my childhood and always wanted to know more about the work of an architect. Zumthor seemed like an ideal partner, as his work is truly rethinking the very basis of what architecture is or can be." The film captures the essence of Zumthor's radical approach to architecture, which emphasizes the tactile and emotional experience of space.
The documentary also features appearances by filmmakers Ava DuVernay and Werner Herzog, actress Ever Anderson, singer-songwriter Sophie Hunger, visual artist Tarek Atoui, and actress and dancer Aoi Yamada, who also appeared in Wenders' "Perfect Days." Notably, Brad Pitt serves as an executive producer on the film, having supported Zumthor's LACMA bid.
Wenders' journey with Zumthor is not just about capturing the architect's work but also about exploring the relationship between architecture and the human experience. "At the end, we shook hands on 'doing something real together,' " Wenders said. "Little did we know that the journey would last 14 years." The film is a testament to their shared vision and the enduring impact of Zumthor's work on the architectural world.
The documentary aims to challenge the notion that serene spaces are a luxury in a world of flattened cities, arguing that they can change our idea of what the world could be. "But they can change our idea of what the world could be," Wenders emphasized. The film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival marks a significant milestone in both Wenders' and Zumthor's careers, highlighting the intersection of art, architecture, and human experience.
