US envoys meet Putin in Moscow for talks on ending Ukraine war

US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Saturday for renewed talks on ending the war in Ukraine. The talks, which lasted three hours, were described as 'constructive and extremely frank' by Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov.
The envoys are set to travel to Kyiv on Sunday for the first time in the peace process, following substantive discussions with Putin. According to reports, the talks also covered economic issues and potential mutually beneficial projects between Russia and the US.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness for a substantive conversation and agreed to a three-day ceasefire on both capitals. Putin ordered no strikes against Kyiv starting midnight, while Zelensky said Ukraine would refrain from strikes on Moscow until Monday.
The envoys' visit to Kyiv is expected to gather pace as efforts to end the war in Ukraine continue, with plans to be announced in the coming weeks.

- Ushakov also said "note was made of the Russian army's tangible advances in the combat zone" and that there was acknowledgement that talks needed to address "the root causes of the conflict".
- Kushner and Witkoff have visited Russia several times but given Ukraine's airspace has been closed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, it is not clear how they will be travelling to Kyiv from Moscow.
