Scientists Unveil Genetic Links to Personality Traits

In Short: A new study has identified over 1,200 genetic variants associated with personality traits, shedding light on the complex interplay between genetics and behavior.

In a groundbreaking study published in Nature, an international team of researchers has identified more than 1,200 genetic variants linked to the five major personality traits. This extensive analysis, which involved over 1.1 million participants, brings new insights into the genetic underpinnings of personality.

The research, conducted by an international team, combined data from 46 research cohorts to examine the genetic differences associated with personality and other outcomes. The study found 1,260 lead genetic variants linked to the Big Five traits, with 824 of these variants not previously associated with the corresponding personality characteristics.

The findings suggest that many small genetic influences may contribute to personality, which can then be linked with behavior, health, and other experiences over a lifetime. Common genetic variants explained only a relatively small share of the differences in personality between people, ranging from 4.8% to 9.3%, depending on the trait and analysis.

While the existence of dark matter remains a mystery, scientists at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota have made a significant step towards detecting it. For two years, 250 scientists and engineers from 39 institutions spanning six countries have rigorously scrutinized data from one of the world's most sensitive dark matter detectors, called LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ). The study found one particle interaction that could potentially have been caused by a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP), which scientists believe makes up dark matter.

The findings were revealed at a conference in Japan on Tuesday, but the research has yet to undergo peer review by other scientists. The study was led by Eriksen, a scientist from the University of Bristol, who was part of the two-year study to try and measure the invisible substance thought to make up over 85% of the universe. "Although scientists have long been certain of the existence of dark matter, because it is invisible as it reflects no light, the findings are promising," said Eriksen.

In a related development, when scientists at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil analyzed 53 locally caught fish, they found nearly all were contaminated by worms. On average, the scientists explained, they have gone from finding less than one worm in every 100 caught fish to more than one worm in every single host caught. This contamination could have significant implications for the local ecosystem and public health.
