Scientists at the Sanford Underground Research Facility may have made a breakthrough in detecting dark matter, a substance thought to make up over 85% of the universe, according to reports from the BBC. The findings, revealed at a conference in Japan, come from a two-year study involving 250 scientists and engineers from 39 institutions across six countries, including the University of Bristol.
The study, which used one of the world's most sensitive dark matter detectors called LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ), found one particle interaction that could potentially be caused by a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP), a leading candidate for dark matter. However, the research has not yet undergone peer review by other scientists.
The search for dark matter is crucial in understanding the universe, as scientists have long been certain of its existence, even though it remains invisible. The study highlights the ongoing efforts to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos, with the potential to change our understanding of the universe's fundamental makeup.
