According to reports, the Israeli military struck several areas in the Gaza Strip, dismantling four Hamas weapon storage facilities. The military claimed the facilities held "Kalashnikov guns, explosive devices, additional ammunition, and military equipment." However, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that three Palestinians were killed in the Gaza City strikes overnight, and another 21 across the Strip by Israeli shelling and gunfire after dawn.
The Israeli military's actions come amid ongoing attacks and seizures of territory in Gaza since a ceasefire deal was agreed last October. The Gaza health ministry reported that Israel has killed at least 1,222 Palestinians during this period. Hamas has stated that it will disarm, but only if Israel ends "all forms of aggression" against it and withdraws its forces from Gaza.
In a separate development, the Israeli Air Force and Navy carried out strikes in Gaza overnight, killing top Hamas commanders. The military announced that Hassan Labad, the deputy head of the security mechanism, along with senior officials Asem Shabir, Abdullah Abu Kaloub, and Mohammed Abu Marek, were among those killed. The military claimed these officials were involved in rebuilding Hamas and advancing terror activity against Israel.
The ongoing conflict has led to a series of protests and calls for divestment from Israel. In Providence, a 2024 proposal urged the city council not to invest in Israel bonds, reflecting growing activism against Israel. Activists are more confident this time, citing the success in Somerville, where a ballot measure mentioned Israel by name.
In a military development, TKMS announced the delivery of the INS DRAKON, the third and final submarine of the HDW "Dolphin" class, to the Israeli Navy on 1 September 2026. Analysis of available imagery suggests these submarines may carry submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), potentially providing Israel with a more survivable sea-based strategic strike capability.
