Steinem co-founded Ms., the first major publication to be owned, run, and written by women, according to CBS News. In her early years as a reporter for New York magazine, she attended a gathering of women speaking out about their experiences obtaining an illegal abortion in 1969.
Before Ms., the issues it took on could only be found in small local underground journals, Steinem told. She told Delaware Public Media, 'So that we need a magazine that's a kind of consciousness-raising group in itself, a friend, you know, that comes into your house and is something that really tells the truth about your life.
The magazine faced a constant battle between satisfying readers and funders, as it wrote about things like welfare and lesbianism and published articles written by and about Black women, according to Delaware Public Media. In a social media post, the Gloria Steinem Foundation said she 'passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her.
