According to Dr Aishwarya, proper storage and handling of vegetables are crucial to maintaining their freshness and safety. Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, warns that storing vegetables together without considering their specific needs can lead to spoilage and contamination. She advises against ignoring damaged or spoiled vegetables, as one spoiled item can affect others stored nearby.
Twinkle Khanna, in an episode of Spacelift by Tweak India, shared her go-to veggie-washing trick to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination and tummy aches. She uses a baking soda solution to wash vegetables, which she believes helps eliminate pesticides and reduce the risk of bacterial contamination like Cyclospora, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and watery diarrhoea.
Dr Aishwarya R, a Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, emphasizes the importance of thorough washing to avoid bacterial contamination. She notes that not washing vegetables can lead to symptoms like dehydration. She suggests soaking vegetables in a vinegar or baking soda solution to remove pesticides.
Peeling fruits and vegetables can also help remove the outer layer, which may have more pesticides, and using a vegetable brush can further clean the tough skins of fruits and vegetables.
