Research from the team suggests that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and exposure to harmful toxins in the dust may be causing their brains to age faster.

Brain scans of 9/11 responders and individuals from recent disasters like the 2026 earthquakes in Venezuela, Colombia, and Indonesia, and the floods in Nepal, have shown a similar increase in beta-amyloid deposits, a protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline.

The team found that the brains of 9/11 male responders with PTSD had MRI results consistent with older-appearing brains compared to those without PTSD. This concern is heightened by the physical and mental health effects experienced by first responders during and after rescue and recovery operations.

As a physician in occupational health, the researcher can empathize with the struggles of first responders, who often face toxic fumes, dust, and cries for help during and after disasters.
