Casey struggled on the fourth play-off hole, missing a chip shot and allowing Lawrence to win the European Masters tournament in Switzerland. The tournament, held at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, saw Casey start the day six shots ahead but falter in his final round. Despite a strong finish, including five birdies in seven holes, Casey's efforts were ultimately in vain as Lawrence secured victory with a stunning bogey-free 62.

Casey, a former world No. 3 and three-time Ryder Cup winner, had pledged to donate his winnings to the victims of a New Year's Eve fire in the Swiss mountain resort. However, his form dipped significantly, dropping shots on three of his opening eight holes and missing four putts for the first prize of $637,500. Lawrence, who had led at the halfway stage, put together a bogey-free 62 to set the clubhouse target and eventually won the tournament for the third time, equalling the record of Seve Ballesteros.

Commenting on the outcome, Casey said, "I feel for Paul, he played great golf and it looked like it was his all day, even in the play-off." The tournament took place at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, where 41 people were killed and 115 others injured in a fire in a bar on New Year's Eve. Casey, who now lives in Switzerland, had previously pledged his winnings to the Fondation Beloved, a charity supporting those affected by the fire.

Both men parred the first three extra holes before Lawrence secured the win with a long birdie putt, becoming only the second player, after Seve Ballesteros, to win the European Masters three times. The tournament was a significant event for both players, with Casey leading after the third round and Lawrence putting together a remarkable final round to secure the victory.
