The 49-year-old Englishman, who had pledged his winnings to the victims of a New Year's Eve fire in the Swiss resort, missed a chip shot on the fourth play-off hole, allowing Lawrence to sink his birdie putt and secure the win.
Casey, the former world No. 3 and three-time Ryder Cup winner, had led the tournament until a stumble on the front nine left him two behind Lawrence at one stage. However, he picked up five birdies in the next seven holes to reclaim the lead, only to bogey the 18th and enter a play-off. Both men parred the first three extra holes before Lawrence made a 18-foot birdie putt on the fourth play-off hole, becoming only the second player to win the Swiss event three times.
Lawrence's victory was a remarkable turnaround, as he put together a bogey-free 62 to set the clubhouse target of 18-under. Casey, who now lives in Switzerland, had held a three-stroke lead after the third round and had pledged his winnings to the Fondation Beloved, which supports those affected by the fire. Despite his efforts, Casey missed his chances on the 18th green, standing over a putt with the chance to win four times.
The tournament was played at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Crans-Montana, where 41 people were killed and 115 others injured in a fire in a bar in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Lawrence's win equaled the record of Seve Ballesteros, who also won the tournament three times. The LIV golfer, who dropped shots on three of his opening eight holes, including a double bogey six on the sixth, put together a stunning performance to secure the victory.
