MIAMI -- An Amazon cargo plane barreled off a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, striking multiple vehicles and bursting into flames, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and forcing the closure of all runways at one of the nation’s busiest airports, according to reports from ABC7 New York.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the aircraft overran the runway at around 2 p.m. after heading into Florida from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that 60 units were at the scene trying to extinguish the fire, with the plane having struck multiple vehicles.
All runways and taxiways were closed and a ground stop is in effect, an airport spokesperson said. The FAA expects flights to be delayed after the Miami airport does reopen, with a low rate of arrivals and departures anticipated.
The aircraft was operating Amazon Air flight CSB7598 from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami when the accident occurred. An Amazon Air Boeing 767 freighter was involved, and initial reports described the aircraft as having gone off or overrun Runway 30, although the precise sequence of events remains to be established.
Photographic records show N1997A, previously operating Amazon services from Miami under Atlas Air, according to Aviation24.be. Images from the scene indicate that the aircraft travelled beyond the runway and across a road before coming to rest. Unverified reports circulating on social media have referred to multiple casualties, but these figures have not been independently confirmed by Miami-Dade authorities, the FAA, or the National Transportation Safety Board.
