Protesters dressed in black, including those wearing balaclavas, blocked major roads leading into the Port of Dover on Saturday morning, halting all traffic in and out of the port due to an ongoing public order incident, according to the port's statement.
The Port of Dover, located about 110km southeast of London, is a critical gateway for more than nine million passengers and two million freight vehicles annually, according to the port's website.
The demonstration, which involved dozens of masked protesters, forced authorities to temporarily halt access, leaving vehicles stuck in queues stretching for around four miles, disrupting both passenger and freight operations.
Officials argued that the blocking of major transport routes went beyond the bounds of a peaceful protest, affecting people who had no involvement in the political dispute, and emphasized the need for tolerance of such disruptions.
