Pensioners Face Winter Fuel Payment Changes

In Short: More than nine million pensioners are set to receive hundreds of pounds for heating costs this year, but eligibility rules have been tightened.
The government has restricted the winter fuel payment scheme for the 2024 winter to only the lowest-income pensioners, a move that has now been expanded for the 2026-2027 winter.
HMRC has begun contacting over one million pensioners regarding changes to their 2026/27 tax code that will reclaim the winter fuel payment, but it is too late to opt out for the current winter.
Five groups of pensioners will not be eligible for the £300 winter fuel payment, with those living in care homes (except in one case) still qualifying.
The scheme includes several exclusions, with higher-income pensioners potentially having the payment recovered through the tax system.
Eligible pensioners could receive between £100 and £300, with the payment being automatically received by most qualifying individuals based on their circumstances.
