NASA's $4.3 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket on Sunday, embarking on a three-month journey to a point a million miles from Earth. The telescope, equipped with a wide-field 300-megapixel camera and a Hubble-class mirror originally built for a spy satellite, will map the large-scale structure of the cosmos and search for clues about dark energy and dark matter.

The launch comes after a series of diplomatic tensions between the United States and France, where President Emmanuel Macron planned a high-profile space summit. The White House reportedly pressured US space companies to skip the summit, citing concerns that it might include policy prescriptions that could disadvantage US firms.

The telescope's wide-field camera will also search for exoplanets, with the expectation that the number of discovered planets will exceed 100,000 by the end of its mission. Additionally, Roman is expected to catalog over 20 billion stars, 2 billion galaxies, tens of thousands of supernova blasts, and countless transient events like flares generated by stars near black holes.

President Trump, whose administration had previously attempted to reduce funding for the Roman Space Telescope, called NASA chief Jared Isaacman during a post-launch news conference at the Florida spaceport. Isaacman held his phone up to a microphone so the president could address the room, highlighting the political significance of the launch.

The launch of the Roman Space Telescope marks a significant step in understanding the universe, with its wide array of scientific goals and the potential to revolutionize our knowledge of dark energy, dark matter, and the distribution of celestial bodies.
