The tradition of not shaking hands between Indian and Pakistani cricket teams has persisted, extending beyond senior teams to include Under-19 World Cup and Asia Cup Rising Stars meetings.
On Saturday, the two sides skipped the customary pre-toss handshake during their Women’s Asia Cup match in Dubai, with Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Pakistani counterpart Fatima Sana going through the toss without exchanging pleasantries.
This gesture, which began after the Pahalgam attack in April 2023, saw then-Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav refusing to shake hands with Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha, and later, India not accepting the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
The handshake saga has continued, with the Indian women’s team also avoiding the gesture during a Women’s World Cup match in Colombo the following month, dedicating their victory to the Indian Armed Forces.
