India Expands Freight Rail Network with New Corridors

In Short: India is examining the development of a new freight corridor in Maharashtra to enhance its rail network, according to officials.
India is expanding its dedicated freight rail network by examining the development of a new corridor parallel to the Samruddhi Mahamarg in Maharashtra, as per Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Central Railway.
These dedicated freight corridors (DFCs) are providing additional capacity for freight trains and reducing pressure on the existing railway network, a Railway official stated.
The DFCs have not only increased the speed and capacity of freight trains but have also helped in reducing the pressure of freight traffic on the existing rail network. This provides additional capacity for operation of passenger trains and gives impetus to the country’s logistics efficiency, supply chain and economic development,' said the official, as quoted in The Indian Express.
In July, Indian Railways increased domestic coal supplies to power plants by 20 per cent compared to the same month last year, responding to rising demand at thermal power plants, according to the ministry.
