Turkmenistan Tackles Major Methane Leaks

Turkmenistan is making efforts to repair its energy infrastructure and seal major methane leaks, according to a report by the Guardian. The United Nations’ Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) has identified Turkmenistan as one of the world’s leading sources of methane leaks, with the country having three of the six worst leaks detected over the past six months and nine of the top 50.
A July commentary published by the TDH state news agency indicated that plugging these leaks is part of a broader plan to update the country’s natural gas infrastructure. In 2024, Turkmenistan signed on to the Global Methane Pledge, a joint US and EU initiative aimed at achieving a 30 percent reduction in global methane emissions by 2030, based on 2020 levels.
The UN’s MARS has flagged Turkmenistan as a significant source of methane emissions, with the country having three of the six worst leaks detected over the past six months and nine of the top 50. This underscores the urgency of the country’s efforts to address these leaks and align with global environmental goals.
