The federal administration has previously sued Nevada for its decision to keep its voter file redacted, leading to tensions over voter data protection. Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar called the request for voter information an attempt at intimidation.
A federal judge in Nevada recently dismissed a Department of Justice lawsuit that sought Nevada’s unredacted voter registration list, a victory for voter privacy. However, the Department of Homeland Security has launched an operation involving hundreds of Homeland Security Investigations agents across nine states, including Nevada, probing voter fraud.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin informed Aguilar that the federal agency had found "as many as" 15,903 noncitizens in Nevada’s voter records. The Nevada Independent reported that the subpoenas mark a dramatic escalation of the Trump administration's efforts to interfere in Nevada elections.
The Department of Justice previously said it sought the records to assess Nevada’s compliance with voter-list maintenance requirements under federal law. The Nevada secretary of state’s office characterized the subpoenas as coming from the FBI, though the DOJ has not confirmed this.
