Researchers returned to the Arctic in March with a more advanced geophone sensor to study under-ice sounds, particularly those produced by ice fractures. This equipment will help in developing predictive models for coastal community resilience and monitoring adversary activities in the region.
The research, conducted during the OIC 2026, involves setting up temporary infrastructure on a drifting sheet of Arctic sea ice, which serves as a unique testing ground for prototype equipment and experiments in an otherwise inhospitable environment.
By analyzing the unique acoustic signatures of ice fractures, researchers hope to enhance predictive capabilities, aiding in geopolitical strategy and surveillance efforts in the Arctic.
