Body of World's Youngest King Returns to Uganda Amid Succession Row

The return of King Oyo's body to Uganda marks the beginning of a nine-day official mourning period for the Tooro kingdom, which is currently embroiled in a succession dispute.
Oyo, who ruled over more than two million people, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's youngest reigning monarch. His body arrived at Entebbe Airport from the United States and will be transported through traditional routes to Fort Portal, the kingdom's seat.
Culture Minister Henry Tumukunde urged Ugandans to rely on official information from the government and the Tooro Kingdom, emphasizing that any dispute would be handled according to the law governing traditional and cultural leaders.
The body will lie in state at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal for nine days, during which time it will be transported through the kingdom in a road procession, allowing subjects to bid farewell to their monarch. King Oyo had planned to return home in time for the Empango celebrations, but his plans were cut short by his passing.

- As per Tooro traditions, the body cannot remain outside the kingdom and will therefore be airlifted directly to Kyegegwa Airstrip in Tooro.
- Once in Fort Portal, the remains will be taken directly to Karuziika Palace, the kingdom’s seat, where they will lie in state throughout a nine-day mourning period known locally as “okugaragara.” Kingdom protocol bars the body from moving between royal residences, requiring it to remain at Karuziika until burial.
- Legit.ng earlier reported that Uganda is in mourning following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of the Tooro Kingdom, who passed away at approximately 10:00 pm on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
- Before the burial, a church service will be held, after which the king will be carried in a traditional procession to the Karambi Royal Tombs.
- The king’s body will lie in state at Karuziika Palace, where members of the public will be allowed to pay their respects, while prayers will be held each evening.
- Mouners gathered at Entebbe airport on Friday to receive the body of Uganda’s King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
