Scientists at the Sanford Underground Research Facility may have made a breakthrough in detecting dark matter, a substance that makes up a significant portion of the universe but has never been directly observed. The lead researcher, Dr. Sam Eriksen, believes this could be the first step in understanding dark matter as a particle, though further research is needed to confirm the findings.

The study, conducted over two years by 250 scientists and engineers from 39 institutions across six countries, focused on one of the world's most sensitive dark matter detectors, LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ). The LZ detector, located in Lead, South Dakota, searches for WIMPs, or weakly interacting massive particles, crashing into atomic nuclei in a tank of liquid xenon.

The analysis of data from LZ found a single particle interaction that could potentially be a dark matter particle. However, researchers caution that more data is necessary to verify this finding. If confirmed, this event could be one of many similar detections, suggesting that dark matter may be more prevalent than previously thought.
