Zelensky warns airlines: Russia’s skies 'completely unsafe

Russia continued its attacks on Kyiv for another consecutive night as air defenses in Ukraine's capital shot down Russian drones into Sept. 1, according to Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground. Ukraine does not threaten civil aviation, yet carriers flying to Moscow, St. Petersburg, or other major hubs must factor in the risk of drones in Russian skies, Zelensky said in a post on Telegram.
"Today we want to warn every airline that uses Russian airspace, every insurer, everyone who still uses key Russian airports — Russian skies are becoming completely dangerous," he said. The heaviest toll was reported in Kyiv and the surrounding oblast, where Russia’s fifth consecutive day of attacks killed at least 12 people and injured 21 others.
Ukrainian authorities would provide international bodies with full information about the hazards, according to Zelensky. The war needs to end, and leaders are right to say this to Putin," Zelensky said.
"We have clear indications from our intelligence services and partner agencies, as well as from investigations in Germany and in our European partner countries, of Russian involvement," German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said.
"Therefore, for the sake of diplomacy, for the sake of negotiations — when our partners turn to us about this — we will ensure that the Russian sky is cleared of drones for certain periods of time and in certain directions," he said.
While the Russian capital is well-defended against aerial threats, Ukrainian officials have previously said that disrupting aviation operations is a strategic way of bringing the Kremlin's war home to the Russian population.
A Ukrainian drone attack damaged the Russian Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga in Leningrad Kyiv Oblast early on Sept. 1, regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko said. Koretskyi said the move was necessary as the defense against Russia's full-scale invasion is becoming significantly more expensive.
