Student with ICE ankle monitor dies by suicide in Ohio

Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old student at Wright State University, said he had been bullied at school and felt “humiliated” by the device. Ankle monitors are usually issued because of a lack of detention space for more than 300,000 Haitians who lost TPS after the Supreme Court decision in June, a senior Department of Homeland Security official has said.
Carl Ruby, a local pastor and immigration advocate, said in a statement that Pierre Damas Bel’s family wanted people to know it was a suicide related to immigration policies. Pierre Damas Bel’s is believed to be the first suicide in Springfield related to immigration enforcement, he said.
He transferred to nearby Wright State University and immediately faced taunts and bullying from students, his family said.
