LUX-ZEPLIN Detects Possible Dark Matter Signal

A new analysis of data from LUX-ZEPLIN, or LZ, found a single particle interaction that is consistent with dark matter, researchers report September 1 at the TeV Particle Astrophysics meeting in Tendo , Japan, and in a paper posted on LZ’s website.

The invisible substance pervades the cosmos but has eluded direct detection so far The LZ detector (shown under construction) spotted a single event that could be a dark matter particle, but scientists need more data to check.

If dark matter really is behind this event, there are likely others waiting to be found. Dark matter is an invisible substance that’s never been directly observed, despite decades of searching.

Today LZ collaboration scientists announced that they saw a particle collision that they cannot explain. According to the project’s best estimates, the flash’s chances of being a statistical fluke are about half a percent (which is still far above the 0.00003 percent threshold used by particle physics experiments to hail a discovery).

That a single unexplained event can carry so much statistical significance shows how incredibly sensitive the technology has become. The LZ collaboration announced the finding in a presentation today at the TeVPA conference in Japan.
