Qatar says efforts under way to end Iran-US war and reopen Strait of Hormuz

"I think that we have to accept that this crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, the constraints on exports are going to be a somewhat permanent feature for the next few years," said David Goldwyn , a former U.S. State Department special envoy.
“We said from the start, any attempt to normalise the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in this way will end with regional escalation, and this is what we saw yesterday and today,” Al-Ansari said in the press conference. The vice president also said that the war was at a phase where "a lot of what we're doing is actually ensuring the free flow of commerce in the Strait of Hormuz.
The new strikes the U.S. launched against Iran on Tuesday come after American forces struck an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend. Iranian state media said on Tuesday that four projectiles hit parts of the southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province, east of the Strait of Hormuz.
Around 25 percent of the world’s seaborne trade passed through the strait before Israel and the US launched a war on Iran on February 28, reducing traffic in the waterway to a trickle. But other major projects, including a larger Saudi pipeline expansion, are likely to take several more years, according to the International Energy Agency , whose members are oil producing countries including the United States.
“The [regional] visits [to Tehran]… are all to support mediation efforts, and attempting to return to the negotiation path, and guaranteeing no return to escalation in the region,” Al-Ansari said about the visit. The IEA says that continued vulnerability of shipping routes, including Bab el-Mandeb, where Yemen's Iran-allied Houthi rebels have launched attacks, mean that regional agreements are vital.
Qatar is holding talks with Oman and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions in the region, the country’s Foreign Ministry has said, after a recent flare-up in fighting between the US and Iran. Qatar, which has been economically impacted by the war, has encouraged a peaceful resolution to the crisis and is in contact with regional leaders to encourage dialogue, Al-Ansari said.
McNally noted that Iran has repeatedly demonstrated that it is able to attack redirected routes and locations of expanded terminals.
