Judge to Rule on Tyler Robinson Trial in Charlie Kirk Murder Case

A judge in Utah is expected to decide Tuesday whether there is enough evidence to move forward with a trial against Tyler Robinson , the 23-year-old man accused of fatally shooting prominent conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.

Robinson then changed outfits and took position on a rooftop overlooking the amphitheater where Charlie Kirk was speaking, David Hull said. Police say the sniper's bullet that killed Charlie Kirk was fired from a rooftop some 150 yards away from the spot on a campus courtyard where Charlie Kirk was killed, as NPR has reported.

District Judge Tony Graf has said lawyers on both sides of the case will have a maximum of two hours each to present closing arguments Tuesday before the court takes a one-hour break. Aggravating circumstances will likely play a key role in the case, as they could be used to justify imposing the death penalty for Robinson if he is found guilty.

Some 3,000 people were on hand, and were listening to Charlie Kirk speak when he was shot, police said. Investigators have said they found the suspected murder weapon — a bolt-action rifle — wrapped in a towel in a wooded area near the Utah Valley University amphitheater.

On the morning after the killing, investigators found a Mauser.30-06 caliber bolt-action rifle that they believe to be the murder weapon. Authorities said video footage showed Robinson, who then lived in Washington County, Utah, arriving and moving around on the campus, as member station KUER reported.

Robinson was arrested after a relative turned him in to police, saying the young man "had confessed or implied that he was the shooter," as NPR reported. In the emotional interaction that followed, according to Lance Twiggs, Robinson “said he wishes he hadn’t done it.

Lance Twiggs told investigators that Robinson said he intended to confess to his parents or go to the police.
